UPA Rules

VUL Exceptions & Additions to the UPA 11th Edition

These amendments apply to all VUL Leagues. See below for additional exceptions for 5-on-5 Turf Leagues.

A. Teams

  1. All players must complete the online Statement of Consent for the appropriate event (e.g. summer league, fall league) before playing any game.
  2. Teams must have a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 25 players on their roster.
  3. Teams must have at least 6 players, 3 of each gender, on the field in order to play.
  4. Each team must have a light and dark uniform or distinctive jersey at each game.
  5. For a player to be eligible for playoffs, they must be on that team's roster and have played at least five games with that team during regular league play.

B. Fields

  1. The VUL uses a 10 yard brick.

C. Miscellaneous

  1. Footblocks are not allowed. If a footblock is attempted (successfully or not) by a marker within 3 meters of the thrower, the thrower can call a foul.

D. Regular Division Games

  1. Games are to 13 points with a point cap at 15.
  2. Start times
    1. If one team is ready to play 15 minutes after the scheduled start time (i.e. 6:15pm in summer) and the other team is not, the ready team is awarded one point. If the ready team is still waiting after 30 minutes (i.e. 6:30pm in summer), they are awarded two more points, for a total of three.
    2. If one team is ready between 15 and 30 minutes after the scheduled start time, and the other team is not ready after 30 minutes, the ready team is awarded one point.
    3. If one team is ready to play 45 minutes after the scheduled start time (i.e. 6:45pm in the summer) and the other team is not, the ready team wins by default (6-0).
  3. There is no half time, and each team has 2 timeouts per game.
  4. End times
    1. All games are soft-capped 80 minutes after the scheduled start time (i.e. 7:20pm and 8:50pm in the summer). When the soft-cap occurs, the current point is completed. The game is then played to the highest score at that time + 2 (point cap in rule D.1 still applies).
    2. Captains waiting to play in the second timeslot may hard-cap games running overtime by informing both playing captains that they have 5 minutes to play. After 5 minutes, points in progress can complete but no further points may be started.
  5. Timeouts are not allowed once a game has been capped. If a time-out is called during a cap, play stops, that team is charged with one time-out, and play immediately restarts with a check. If the calling team had any timeouts left, they retain possession; if they had used their 2 timeouts, it is a turnover.

E. Single-Header-Division Games

Rules from section D apply with these exceptions:

  1. Games are to 17 points with a point cap at 19.
  2. If one team is late, the trigger times for awarding points are 30 minutes and 45 minutes after the scheduled start time (i.e. 7:00pm and 7:15pm in summer), with a default occurring after 60 minutes (i.e. 7:30pm in the summer).
  3. All games are soft-capped after 135 minutes (i.e. 8:45pm in the summer).

Exceptions & Additions to the above for 5-on-5 Turf League

A. Teams

  1. Teams must have a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 16 players on their roster.
  2. Teams must have at least 4 players, 2 of each gender, on the field in order to play.

B. Fields

  1. The field is 25m wide and 75m long in total, with 15m endzones. There is no brick.

C. Miscellaneous

  1. Stall counts are to 8. Normal Delay of Game rules apply (count-downs start from 16 and 8).
  2. There is no pull after a point. When a team scores, the receiving player acknowledges the goal and immediately places the disc on the ground. The other team has 8 seconds to take possession and put the disc into play at that spot (they cannot walk the disc to the goal line).
  3. Players substitute on the fly. The designated sub zone is at the midline of the field, 10m in length, marked by cones. Every player entering the field must "high five" the outgoing player on the sideline before entering the field.
  4. At the beginning of a game, both teams line up at the back of the end zone for the initial pull.
  5. When a team gains possession in their endzone, if the disc left the field of play, it the disc can be put into play on the perimeter line where it crossed, or brought to the front of the endzone at the point closest to where it crossed the perimeter line. But if the disc did not leave the field of play and came to rest in the endzone, it is put into play where it came to rest.

D. Game timing

Due to the short timeslots, "Ultimate-time" is unacceptable during Turf League. You must on be time.

  1. Games are to 21 points (point cap is 21).
  2. Start Times: Games start 10 minutes after the hour (7:10pm, 8:10, 9:10pm, 10:10pm).
    1. If one team is ready to play 20 minutes after the scheduled start time, and the other team is not, the ready team is awarded 3 points. If the ready team is still waiting after 30 minutes, they are awarded 3 more points, for a total of 6.
    2. If one team is ready between 20 and 30 minutes after the scheduled start time, and the other team is not ready after 30 minutes, the ready team is awarded 3 points.
    3. If one team is ready to play 40 minutes after the scheduled start time and the other team is not, the ready team wins by default (6-0).
  3. End times: Games are 50 minutes in length (i.e. they finish on the hour). This leaves 10 minutes between games.
    1. Games are hard-capped 5 minutes before the hour. Finish the point in progress. Ties are OK.
