Field Closures
League games may be cancelled when fields are unplayable due to bad weather such as snow or heavy rain.
There are three ways this may occur:
- Fields may be closed by the Vancouver Parks Board, as indicated on their field status page. For weekends, they make their decisions by 1:00pm on Friday, and we inform our members by 3:00pm.
- If the forecast is uncertain, the Parks Board may leave fields open with a 'user discretion'
warning, meaning the VUL can make a decision depending on how the weather goes. If we expect the fields
to be unplayable, we will cancel games at the following times:
- Saturday games: by 3:00pm on Friday
- Sunday games: by 6:00pm on Saturday
- weekday games: by 2:00pm on day of the game
- If the fields were expected to be playable, but the weather changes, team captains are
expected to use good judgment when they arrive at the fields and cancel games if appropriate.
According to the Park Board, fields are not playable when there is:
- heavy rain warning,
- standing water or large muddy areas on playing surface, or
- frost or frozen playing surface.
Artificial Turf: The Park Board has also published a set of terms & conditions for artificial turf fields. All VUL players must abide by these conditions.
Communication Methods
If the weather is questionable, we may post an update to our Twitter account to clarify things. Those updates will also appear on the home page under "Field Status Messages". If you do not see any update by the times listed above, that means games are ON as scheduled (but you may still need to cancel if your field turns out to be unplayable).
If games are cancelled by the VUL, we will post to Twitter and send all captains an email.
A note on defaults: one team cannot unilaterally cancel a game due to the weather. If the fields are open, it is expected that both teams will show up to the field. If one team does bail, they are in default and will owe a $25 fee to the league. However, if both captains communicate in advance by phone or email, they can jointly agree to cancel or postpone a game.
Lastly, note that the VUL Twitter account is for outgoing messages only. We may read tweets you send to us, but if you'd like a response, please use email or the phone.
